Johnson County Public Health staff lead tobacco prevention and control initiatives in Johnson, Iowa, Henry, Lee, and Des Moines Counties. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) publishes recommendations for tobacco control and prevention. These strategies fall into three categories:
- Preventing the initiation of tobacco use by youth;
- Reducing exposure to secondhand smoke; and
- Promoting tobacco cessation.
Johnson County Public Health staff work with community partners to accomplish these goals. Staff offer free educational presentations for youth, adults, health care providers, businesses/organizations, apartment owners/managers, coalitions, civic organizations, park boards, and elected officials. They offer free education and quitting brochures and posters. Additionally, they can assist with tobacco/nicotine-free policy drafting, passage, and implementation. If you are interested in working together or want to join a local community coalition that addresses tobacco use in these five counties, contact us at 319-356-6040 or [email protected].
