Board of Supervisors

The Johnson County Board of Supervisors is composed of five members elected at large, each serving a four-year term. The Board of Supervisors is the legislative, policy-making, and administrative branch of county government. Their responsibilities include setting the annual county levy rate, certifying the annual budget, adopting and updating ordinances, guiding the strategic direction of the County, and other matters related to the health and welfare of Johnson County and its residents.

NEW - Supervisor Districts

In April 2025, the State of Iowa passed a law requiring Johnson County to elect county supervisors by district, rather than the current at-large system. The County worked with the Secretary of State and Iowa Legislative Services Agency (LSA) to determine the five new supervisor district boundaries.

Initial staggered terms for each district were determined by the County Auditor in January 2026. Districts 2, 3, and 4 will have two-year terms, and districts 1 and 5 will have four-year terms. More information about the new representation plan can be found on the Supervisor Districts page

Board Meetings

The Board of Supervisors typically holds two public meetings each week to conduct County business:

  • Work sessions every Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. to discuss general County business.
  • Formal meetings every Thursday at 9:00 a.m. to consider and act upon official business, except the second Thursday of each month when the meeting start time is 5:30 p.m.

Board of Supervisors meetings are held in the Boardroom, Room 301 of the Johnson County Health & Human Services Building, 855 S Dubuque Street, Iowa City. Meeting dates, times, and locations are subject to change. All Board of Supervisors meetings are open to the public except for closed sessions.
