The Johnson County Board of Supervisors announces two vacancies on the Johnson County Commission of Veterans Affairs for a three-year term beginning June 1, 2026, and expiring May 31, 2029.
The Commission establishes the eligibility for veterans’ general assistance, claims, and denials. They also provide guidance to the Johnson County Veteran Services Director.
Commission members must be an honorably discharged veteran who meets the definition of “veteran” according to Iowa Code, Chapter 35.1. To the greatest extent possible, each member of the commission shall be a veteran of a different military branch. This person must be an eligible elector of Johnson County.
The Veteran Affairs Commission meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 17:00 at the Health and Human Services Building. Appointees are required to attend training on open meetings and records laws codified in Iowa code Chapter 21 and 22. Appointees are also encouraged to attend annual fall and quarterly trainings, as well as various Veterans events.
