County Planning and Zoning Commission to discuss comprehensive plan update March 18

The update process for the Johnson County 2018 Comprehensive Plan: Sustaining Success Through 2028 is moving to its next step. The Johnson County Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing on the proposed Volume 3: Mid-Term Update at 5:30 p.m., Monday, March 18.

County staff will present an overview of the updates proposed. The commission will discuss the proposed update, take public comment and potentially make a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors.

Second installment of property taxes due, late payment penalties begin April 2, 2024

Johnson County property owners are reminded that the second installment of property and mobile home taxes is due Friday, March 1, 2024. Payments need to be delivered to the Treasurer’s Office, paid online or postmarked by April 1, 2024, to avoid a 1 ½ percent monthly penalty that will begin on Monday, April 2, 2024.

In-person payments must be made at the Treasurer’s Office, currently located on the third floor of the Johnson County Health and Human Services Building, 855 S. Dubuque St, Iowa City. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Lower West Branch Road over I-80 in Johnson County set to close Wednesday, Feb. 28

Weather permitting, Lower West Branch Road over I-80 will be closed beginning Wednesday, Feb. 28 until the year 2026. The project involves a new bridge for the Lower West Branch Road overpass as part of the I-80 widening project between Iowa City and West Branch. This project is administered by the Iowa DOT.

Drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, you should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
