Sales Tax
- Sales of boats and OHVs in Iowa are subject to the state sales tax of 6 percent plus local option taxes, if any. This applies to sales by individuals, as well as, dealers.
- Anyone purchasing from an individual should obtain a receipt that shows the cost. The buyer will then pay the sales tax on the cost of the boat to the County Recorder.
- If a trailer is purchased, the 5% motor vehicle use tax is paid to the County Treasurer.
OHV Rules (7/1/2022)
- OHV must be registered with DNR & display current sticker
- Operator must be 18
- Operator must carry proof of insurance
- Cannot exceed 35 mph

Registration Exceptions
Canoes (no motor) 13 feet or less in length do not need registered.
Inflatable vessels 7 feet in length or less do not need registered.
Kayaks 13 feet or less in length do not need registered.
