Tiffin Man Arrested for Voluntary Manslaughter

May 27, 2026 (JOHNSON COUNTY, IA) Today Jesse Burkhart, 42, of Tiffin, Iowa, was arrested on a charge of Voluntary Manslaughter, a Class C Felony. This charge comes from an incident which occurred in Tiffin on January 10, 2026, where Burkhart and the victim engaged in a road rage incident that began in Coralville. Burkhart drove to his residence with the victim following him; upon parking his vehicle, Burkhart went into his home and retrieved a firearm. Burkhart returned to the parking lot and engaged in a verbal argument with the victim, which turned into a brief physical altercation where Burkhart dropped his phone. Burkhart displayed his firearm to the victim when the victim picked up the phone. After Burkhart yelled for his phone to be returned, he shot the victim.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the shooting around 11:45am on January 10th. Upon arrival, deputies located the victim suffering from a gunshot wound outside of the building. The victim was transported to a hospital via Johnson County Ambulance Service and was later pronounced deceased. 

No further details are available at this time. 

A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
