Board of Supervisors

During its formal meeting on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2026, the Board of Supervisors approved placing a $94.5 million general obligation bond referendum on the ballot for the Nov. 3, 2026, election.

If approved by voters, the bond would fund the acquisition of land and the construction, equipping and furnishing of a new sheriff’s office and jail facility. At least 60% of voters must vote “yes” for a bond referendum to pass.

“A growing and prosperous County deserves facilities that are suitable for our residents and our employees,” Board of Supervisors Chairperson Jon Green said. “The current sheriff’s office and jail have been inadequate, and this question represents County residents’ investment in our shared future. I recognize the project cost is significant, but as we’ve seen over the past two decades, the price will only continue to increase so long as we fail to address the problem.”

“I’m happy the Board is moving in the right direction and putting this on the ballot for the voters to decide,” County Sheriff Brad Kunkel said. “This issue is about solving a critical infrastructural need for Johnson County and better serving our staff and those in our custody.”
