When will results be available?

Our plan is to post early voting results promptly at 9 p.m. Early voting results will be reported as a grand total, and will not be broken out by precinct for this election.

After 9 p.m. we will update returns as quickly as they are reported in from the polling places. (Sorry, but we're not promising a specific time. Thanks for asking.)

Runners will bring results media from the precincts to our office.

Results on Cable TV

Results will be available on Iowa City Cable TV beginning at 9 p.m. Results will be on channel 5 on Mediacom cable boxes in Iowa City and University Heights, and on QAM channel 118-3 in Iowa City, Coralville, University Heights and North Liberty.

We will post rotating totals in the four contested races and a list of precincts reporting.

View Results at Auditor's Office

Results will be displayed for the public at the County Administration Building, 913 S. Dubuque St., beginning at 9 p.m. Visitors will see the same display as cable viewers.

E-mailed Results

We will email results to our regular list of news media contacts. Please contact our office with any changes or corrections to addresses. Format and layout will be the same as the returns pages on the website. If your news organization requires a hard-copy fax, please contact our office.

Am I reading this right? It says nobody voted!

Some of our final precinct results may be zero.

Four of our precincts, (Hills, Iowa City 24, North Liberty 3, and West Lucas) are split between two legislative districts. All the splits are uneven, with the overwhelming majority of voters in one district and a very small number in the other district. It is likely that there will be no voters in one or both parties in the smaller part of these precincts.

The early June primary election date means we have historically has extremely low turnout in the student areas of Iowa City (precincts 3, 5, 11, 19, and 20). These areas also have a Republican ballot with no contested races this year. It's rare, but we have in the past seen whole precincts with no voters in one of the parties in a June primary. This last happened in 2004 (Republican) and 2002 (the only uncontested Democratic primary in Johnson County history). In both 2008 and 2012, there were precincts with only one Republican voter.

Number of Precincts

The total number of precincts for Johnson County in primary elections is 58 in all contests except state legislative races. There are 57 polling places, and early boots are counted as a separate precinct.

House District 77 includes 19 precincts (18 election day precincts plus absentee). Three of these precincts are split between legislative districts. District 77 includes the much larger part of precincts North Liberty 3 and West Lucas, and only a very small part of the city of Hills (two registered voters as of May 20).

All of House District 77 is in Johnson Count. NOTE: Our office will only have returns from Johnson County. Contact the Secretary of State or other counties.

Percentage

Percentages will appear to the right of vote totals; for aesthetic reasons they're blank in our sample files. (#DIV/0! errors are ugly.)

Four contests where voters choose only one candidate, percentage is based on total valid voters (votes for candidates plus write-ins.) Over and under votes are not considered when calculating this percentage.

For contests where voters choose more than one candidate, our office has traditionally reported the percentage of voters supporting the candidate using the following formula:

  • votes for the candidate/number of voters participating in the contest

This calculation includes over and under votes. The Board of Supervisors is the only contest where voters choose more than one candidate.

When are the results final?

Once the poll workers have returned their supplies to our office, our staff will check the printouts from the voting machines and make any corrections. Once all corrections are made, results will include the heading "Final Election Night Results." These will be the last returns posted on June 7.

Vote totals usually change in the days following the election as provisional ballots and late arriving absentee ballots with timely postmarks are counted.

All election results are unofficial until the official canvass of votes, conducted by the Johnson County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, June 14. Following the canvass, results will include the heading "Official Canvassed Results." These results will remain on our site permanently as a historic record.
