Do you currently utilize video surveillance at your home or business?  If so, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office would like to hear from you.  Video surveillance is a great crime deterrent, and it is also helpful for law enforcement in solving crime.

How does the program work?

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is forming a program that allows residents and businesses that have security video cameras on their property, to register them. Participation in the program is completely voluntary and there is no fee.

In the event of a critical incident or criminal investigation, business or residential security cameras may capture evidence essential to solving a case. Law enforcement investigations frequently involve deputies canvassing neighborhoods surrounding a crime scene for security cameras. Knowing where cameras are located greatly speeds up investigations by allowing deputies to prioritize where to begin looking for evidence. Many times the best available video evidence is not of the crime scene itself, but of pathways and streets leading into and out of the crime scene.

Does this mean you can access my security cameras without my knowledge?

Absolutely not.  Law enforcement will not have access to any cameras or systems, this program will document the camera locations and the contact information provided by the owner. The program is simply a registry to let the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office know that you have a security camera system, and are willing to team up with law enforcement.

What happens after I register?

In the case of a crime in your area, you would be contacted from the registry in hopes of obtaining video evidence of the crime.  By registering your camera, it is not only a deterrent of crime, but assists the department in its overall crime prevention strategy in your neighborhood.  By collaborating with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office in this effort, you protect yourself, your family and your property.

You may withdraw from this program at any time by contacting the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

How will my privacy be protected?

Your privacy is important to us.  All supplied information is kept confidential and will only be viewed by Johnson County Sheriff's Office personnel during criminal investigations that include areas involved in the investigation.

Who is eligible to participate?

Any business owners or residents that live within the jurisdiction of Johnson County Sheriff’s Office including Hills, Lone Tree, Oxford, Shueyville, Solon, Swisher, Tiffin, and rural residents.  Not sure if your home or business is within Sheriff’s Office jurisdiction?  Check out this map for assistance:   https://gis.johnsoncountyiowa.gov/leav/

What happens if I need to update my information after I’ve submitted my registration?

If you have registered your camera(s) and need to change/update any information previously submitted (i.e. new camera, new contact information, etc.), please complete and submit a new registration form.

The information provided about you and your camera system will be for official use only. Your personal information will remain confidential and not be distributed except as required by law or court order. This program is entirely voluntary and you can withdraw consent of you camera information at any time. If necessary, the Johnson County Sheriff's Office may contact you directly, utilizing the information provided by you at time of registration, to request the appropriate video surveillance footage. Any footage containing or related to criminal activity collected by the Johnson County Sheriff's Office may be utilized as evidence during any stage of a criminal proceeding. Under no circumstance shall the registrants construe that they are acting as an agent and/or employee of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office through this program. Through this program, the Johnson County Sheriff's Office will not request or obtain direct access or remote access to the camera equipment, security footage or cloud stored data.
