Walter W. Johnson, Coralville, IA, a 1928 graduate of U-High, and University of Iowa, enlisted in the U.S. ARMY, July 10, 1944 at Ft. Sheridan, IL. He was assigned to Co. I, 349th Infantry, serving in Italy beginning in July, 1944. Wounded in battle on October 2nd, 1944 and died on October 3, 1944. Officially listed as, KIA.

Pvt. Walter W. Johnson was the first serviceman from Coralville to be killed in WWII. In February, 1954, the newly formed Post 721, Coralville American Legion, voted to name the Post, the Walter Johnson Post 721, of the American Legion. Walter W. “Walt’ Johnson, is buried in Arlington Cemetery.
