Thomas N. Fountain was born May 26, 1935 in Keswick, Iowa. His parents were Howard and Ethyle (Gorman) Fountain. Tom married Joyce Frei on August 29, 1953 in Iowa City; they had two children Barb and Larry.

Tom joined the Iowa National Guard in January 1953 where he served as a cook. In August of 1958, while returning from Guard drill at Camp Ripley Minnesota, Tom was injured in a vehicle accident. His injuries caused him to be paralyzed from the waist down. After a lengthy rehabilitation, Tom was Honorably discharged in November 1962 from the regular Army and placed on permanent disability status.

In the 1960’s and 1970’s Tom was an extremely active member of the Iowa City Jaycees. He held offices at the local and state levels and supported Iowa Jaycees involved at the national level. For his service, Tom was selected to serve as a Junior Chamber International (JCI) Senator (No.8565) and also honored to be designated as a lifetime member of the JCI Senate.

For over 12 years Tom owned and operated “The Chairs and Tables shop” an antique store in Coralville.

Tom was a longtime member of the Eagles Lodge Aerie 695 and the Iowa City VFW Post 3949. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 37 in McAllen Texas. Tom died August 6, 2006 in Iowa City, Iowa.
