Michael Sewall (1923 - 2011) was born and raised in Iowa City. During WW2, he enlisted with the Army Air Forces (AAF) in 1942. After a year of training at various locations, Michael was assigned to the 8th Air Force, 381st Bomb Group, 533rd Bomb Squad. He was a B-17 Co-Pilot and was stationed in Ridgewell, England in 1945. Michael flew several official combat missions over Germany. He also took part in “Operation Revival” where the Army Air Forces picked up and transported POW’s out of German concentration camps. Michael’s claim to fame was that he was personally congratulated by Gen. James Doolittle (Doolittle’s Raiders) after VE Day at the Ridgewell base.

After the War, Michael worked for National Cash Register (NCR) until retirement. He married Mary (Jacobsen) Sewall in 1954 and they eventually settled in North Liberty, Iowa and raised four children - Peg, Pat, Tom and Theresa.
