Matthew Charles Schillig was born near Richmond, Iowa. He was the son of Zeno and Isabelle Schillig. He grew up in the community and in 1942 enlisted in the United States Navy to serve in WWII.

Matt and Betty Pokorny were married on June 7, 1947 in Moline, Illinois. Matt was employed as a mechanic all his working years. Matt had many interests that included treasure hunting and working on the project to save the Old English River Bridge. His main interest was visiting with people, especially kids. He wanted his legacy to be preserving stories for future generations and he accomplished this by writing stories. His grandchildren will always have these stories to remember.
Matt is survived by seven children and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty in 1995, and 3 of his sisters.

During his time in the Navy, Matt Schillig was stationed at the Great Lakes in Illinois, Farragut Idaho, on the USS Coghlan, and the USS Oneida. By the time of his separation in 1946 he had earned the Amphibious Insignia, Victory Medal, Asiatic-pacific- bronze and silver start, and the American area medal.
