Kurt was enlisted in the United States Navy from December 1991 to December 1995 when he was honorably discharged. During this time, he was assigned to two ships and completed three Mediterranean deployments.

From April 1992 to September 1994 his assignment was aboard the USS Saratoga (CV-60). The first of the two Mediterranean deployments during this assignment was from May 1992 to November 1992, and the second was from January 1994 to June 1994. Kurt then served as part of the decommissioning crew from June 1994 until the USS Saratoga's decommission in August 1994.

Kurt's second assignment was aboard the USS Nashville (LPD-13) from September 1994 to November 1995. From March 1995 to September 1995 he completed his third Mediterranean deployment on-board this ship. A notable event during this deployment was the USS Nashville's involvement (as a member of the USS Kearsage's battle group) in the rescue of Captain Scott O'Grady USAF. O'Grady's F-16 was shot down over hostile Bosnian-Serb territory during the Bosnian War on 2 June 1995. He then spent the next six days avoiding capture until his rescue on 8 June 1995.
