Kenneth W. Hein was born in Iowa City, IA on 23 June 1928. He was the fourth of five children born to Paul Anton Hein and Theresa M. Vedepo Hein. His sister Helen Falada of Kalona and his three brothers are deceased: Leo V. Hein, killed in WWII, Robert L. Hein, and Paul Dewayne Hein. He attended Iowa City High School.

Ken entered the Army on 19 January 1951. He was in basic training at Ft Riley, KS, 10th Infantry Division. He served in Korea in the 25th Infantry Division and was wounded 19 November 1951. He was hospitalized in Tokyo and then sent to Walter Reed Hospital in the U.S. He was honorably discharged 28 October 1952.

In September 1953, Kenneth married Esther Leora Lehman and they had one daughter, Gail Patrice Russ. He and his brother Bob owned a small bakery in Iowa City in the 1960s. Ken started showing signs of dementia in 1991 and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 1997. Kenneth died in 2006 and was buried in the Columbarium in the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City.
