Justus was born March 17, 1787 at Litchfield, Connecticut. He married Annie Sedgewick in 1812. He served in the Ohio Militia from 1812-1813 as a Corporal/Sergeant. Honors earned include Pension & Bounty Land.

While living in Portage County, Ohio, Justus joined Capt. Rial McArthur’s Company, Independent Battalion, 4th Brigade, 4th Division, Ohio Militia. In August of 1812 American General Hull moved his Northwestern Army north to reinforce Detroit. Upon arrival he surrendered leaving the entire frontier defenseless. The militias were called up; Justus’ unit from Aug. 22, 1812 to Oct. 29, 1812. They were called up again from April 27, 1813 to May 22 1813.

Justus and his family moved to Clarksfield, Ohio in 1833. Along the way they had nine children with four reaching adulthood. They moved to Iowa in 1854 settling at Pleasant Valley Township, Johnson County Iowa. On April 28, 1861 Justus passed and was buried in the Thompson-Cherry Pioneer Cemetery just southeast of Iowa City, Iowa.
