SFC Mikelson served with the 1st Battalion 410th Infantry (U.S. Army Reserves) Iowa City as a Medic from 1978 to 1984.  SFC Mikelson then became an Army Reserve Recruiter in Iowa City until 1991.  He was cited by the Army Chief of Staff as a Recruiter of Excellence and transferred to the Iowa Army National Guard were he joined the 234th Signal Battalion in Cedar Rapids as a Recruiter.  SCF Mikelson then joined the 109th Medical Battalion as a supply sergeant stationed in Iowa City until 2001.  At that time SCF Mikelson was transferred to the 134th Medical Company (Ground Ambulance) stationed in Washington, Iowa were he served as Readiness NCO until his retirement in 2004. SFC Mikelson has served in the Military Affairs Association since 1984 and Chaired the Association from 1998-2000 and then again from 2004-2014.  SFC Mikelson started the University of Iowa Veterans Center in 2005 and co-founded the Student Veterans of American in 2008.  He has published chapters in “Call to Serve: A Handbook for Student Affairs Professionals Work with Veterans” and “Beyond the American with Disabilities Act”.
