John Hartnett enlisted in the Iowa National Guard on May 6, 1952. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force March 19, 1953. He attended Mechanical school at Amarillo Air Force Base (AFB) Texas and then at Sheppard (AFB) for Jet Engine training. He was stationed at Biggs (AFB) in Texas, in Germany, and Turkey.

On April 26, 1960 John was discharged from the Air Force. In 1960, he joined the Army National Guard and went for training March 8, 1961 at Ft. Benning Georgia. After completing training he worked at RED Horse Armory Des Moines, Iowa before getting assigned at Camp Dodge, Johnston, Iowa.

John moved to Iowa City, Iowa in November 1966 and became a shop foreman. As things changed, he traveled between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids and when time was right he was transferred to the new Cedar Rapids Shop. Where he remained until he retired March 4, 1996, on his 60th Birthday. Retirement was right for him and he went to work for the American Legion at the VA Hospital. He was the hospital representative where he helped many veterans to claim benefits. John was so happy helping his fellow Veteran.
