J.E. ‘Erwin’ Brandstatter was born on March 22, 1919, in Iowa City. He and his family moved to Coralville in 1923. Erwin loved the life in the ‘old days’. He had a Daily Iowa paper route, attended the ‘Old School’ in Coralville, and graduated from U-High in 1936. He was an Upholsterer by trade. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in March, 1942, heeding the call to arms to all able-bodied men. He was assigned to Company B, 601st Ordnance Battalion, and served in Oran, N. Africa, and France, during WWII. Erwin was a Charter Member of the Coralville American Legion Post 721. He attended the annual 601st Ordnance Reunion every year, 1949 to 1988.

He was discharged on December 1, 1945, as a Tec 5, U.S. Army. Erwin married Mary Belle Green of Muscatine, June 16, 1946. They had two sons, Rex (1949) and Rox (1953). Erwin was known as ‘Brandy’ locally, and later owned and operated Brandy’s Vacuum store in Coralville. He died on October 20, 1994. He is buried in Oakhill Cemetery in Coralville.
