Jack (John F) Leonard enlisted in the U.S. Army with five friends 28 July 1948, the summer after graduating from High school.  He spent 13 weeks training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He traveled by ship to Frankfurt, Germany where he served in the Counter Intelligence Core with 120 Officers and 30 enlisted men.

Jack tried out for the European Conference football team.  There were 120 men invited to try out  however less than 30 men made it while only 11 played. He was first team on both the offense and defense for both of years he served in Germany. Their home field was in Stuttgart.

After two years Jack came home however two months later was called back into duty. Jack attended training at Fort Hood, Texas before being sent to Korea. It took 18 days to reach Germany by ship, and 21 days to travel to Korea. Jack crossed both the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans during his time in the service. His favorite part of the being in the Army was they offered all the food he could eat; his least favorite was sleeping in the tents in Korea.

Jack came home 17 November 1951. He has been an active member with his local Legion in Anamosa for more than 60 consecutive years.
