Israel Marcus Ritter was born to Benjamin and Mary Stover Ritter from Iowa City, IA. He served in the United States Army from 1862-1864. He joined Company D, 24th Iowa Volunteer Infantry in August of 1862. While home on leave in Iowa City, Israel married Julia A. Barnes on February 23, 1864. He returned to his unit and participated in the Third Battle of Winchester Virginia. On September 19th 1864, Israel was severely wounded and ultimately died as a result of his wounds on October 4th, 1864 at the age of 23.

He was buried on the battlefield at Woods Farm and was reburied later with a military headstone at the Winchester National Cemetery. He rests in section 76, grave 3557.
