Emma Louise (Davis) Hora (1918-1990) was born and resided in Iowa City, a graduate of City High School. Emmie Lou entered The University of Iowa as a nursing student. After completing two years of pre-nursing classes, she answered her country’s call to service on May 10, 1944 by entering as a WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). She served at the US Naval Hospital in San Diego, CA, attending to wounded military members until her honorable discharge on Jan.21, 1946.

Upon returning home to Iowa City, she met up with fellow classmate and returning military veteran, Keith E. Hora. They were married on Sept. 17, 1946. While raising a family she rekindled her passion for drawing and painting, taking numerous classes through the Iowa City Recreation Center.
