Radioman 3rd Class Don Mahanna was born in Iowa City March 9, 1936. Following graduation from Iowa City “City” High School in 1954, he enlisted in the United States Navy on September 28, 1954. He served on the USS San Marcos as a Radioman and then in the Naval Communications Unit #10, U.S. Naval Station, New Orleans, Louisiana as a Communication Supervisor; all during the Korean Conflict. Don discharged Honorably from Active Duty August 1, 1958. He was then transferred to the Commandant Ninth Naval District through September 27, 1962 to complete his U.S. Naval Reserve obligation.

Medals Earned: Navy Occupation Medal and Good Conduct-Service Medal.
