David Therme was born to Volney & Goldie Therme on April 6, 1921 in Farmington, Iowa. He had two sisters and one brother.  He married Pauline Schau on October 14, 1945. While in the Army Air Force he completed an operational tour of duty over enemy-occupied Europe and Germany, during which time he participated in 32 bombing missions as a Bombardier on a B-24 Liberator airplane. He served as a Lead Crew Member on twelve. For his heroic actions David earned the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters.

After completion of his Military service David drove a gas truck and kept books for a local hatchery and John Deere. His hobbies included reading the World Book Encyclopedia, completing crossword puzzles, and following sports.
