Clifford was the oldest of the four Cox boys to fight in WWII. He was in the U.S. Army stationed in the 306th Station Hospital in England, where he stayed until after the war was over. Clifford was active in the VFW. He was commander of the VFW Post 3949 several times. Clifford served from November 26, 1943 thru April 24, 1946 and attained the rank of Corporal.

He and his three brothers are honored at the Veterans National Recreation Trail at Coralville Lake, Iowa.
