Tony Arndt was born and raised in Fairfield IA, 1894. He was a farmer his entire life and was married and had five children. Tony had two brothers that served in the military as well. One of them died in WWI and the other died serving in WWII.

Tony enlisted in the United States Navy in 1918. He was selected to be a Fireman and served at the Great Lakes Naval Station, Pensacola Naval Station, Norfolk, and on the USS Pratt and the USS Westwood. During his time in the Navy, Tony took seven trips across the Atlantic during WWI missions. A story that Tony would tell is that during one of these trips, his ship was stranded off of the Azores Islands. During this time the crew was terrified because they were sitting ducks for a German U-boat, but it never came along.
