COVID impacts on County Operations Energy and Related Fuel Use

At a recent Board of Supervisors work session (Aug. 19, 2020), Sustainability Coordinator Becky Soglin presented findings on how the initial COVID impact period has affected the employee commute, fleet fuel, mileage reimbursements and building energy use. The period covered is mid-March to early or late June, depending on each of the four parameters.

Solar Group Buy Is Mega-Success!

In 2018, nearly 800 people engaged with Solarize Johnson County by attending one of the 22 Solar Power Hours or signing up online--thanks to all for their interest! The program, which offered discounted solar for residential projects, closed on August 31, 2018. In total, 180 households participated, adding 1.12 megwatts of clean solar energy to their homes. Thanks to the Midwest Renewable Energy Association for leading our effort and to all our partner cities--North Liberty, Iowa City, Shueyville, Solon, Coralville, and West Branch, partner departments Johnson County Conservation and Johnson County Public Health, and the additional cities that helped us host meetings (Hills, Lone Tree, Swisher).

Board of Supervisors 2017 Resolution of Commitment to Paris Climate Agreement

On June 8, 2017, one week after President Trump withdrew the United State of American from the landmark Paris Climate Agreement, the supervisors passed a resolution to show the County's unwavering support to help fight the climate change and protect Earth from risks of devastating consequences ensure security, prosperity and health. The leaders also agreed to have the County sign on to a statement of commitment at We Are Still In. A twitter handle @county4climate and #Counties4Climate are being used to help spread the word to other counties in particular

    Iowa Energy Center logo

    Johnson County participates in the Iowa Public Buildings Benchmarking Program, hosted by the Iowa Energy Center. The program helps governments track and manage energy use in public buildings, with the goal of cost-savings and reduced energy use.

    County Property Stormwater Plan

    The County's Soil and Water Conservation Coordinator, in conjunction with the Secondary Roads Department, developed a stormwater management plan for County properties .

    Green Building Certification Program logo

    The Green Building Certification Program for builders of single-family homes in unincorporated areas recognizes those who go "above-and-beyond" code compliance in building new homes that are energy efficient and feature sustainable construction practices.

    Our Employee Bike Share Program partnered with the Iowa City Bike Library to provide two renewed bicycles for staff. Employees can use the bikes for work-related errands and appointments and to meet Wellness goals.
