Public Health Accreditation


What is public health accreditation?


Public Health accreditation logo Public health accreditation is a voluntary process with the goal to improve and protect the health of the public by advancing the quality and performance of the nation’s state, local, Tribal, and territorial public health departments. The national accreditation program is administered by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) and is supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Initial accreditation looks to the measurement of health department performance against a set of nationally recognized, practice-focused and evidenced-based standards. It includes the capacities required to provide the ten Essential Public Health Services, the maintenance of a process organizing, leading, and controlling the efforts of organizational goals, and that the department operates with proper governance.

Accreditation at Johnson County Public Health

Johnson County Public Health (JCPH) received national accreditation from the Public Health Accreditation Board on March 21, 2019. For JCPH, the timeframe of accreditation achievement is supported by work and evidence encompassed during a multi-year period before February 2018. Into the future, alignment with accreditation standards will continue to integrate strategic efforts in order to maintain a commitment to performance and quality. And so, accreditation will better promote, protect, and improve the safety, health, and well-being of Johnson County by advancing the quality and performance of our organization.

What does accreditation mean?

Johnson County Public Health is following national criteria that requires us to explore, understand, and meet several standards for quality and to ensure citizens receive a specific level of quality. To understand the status, JCPH embraces the use of performance measures that connects the delivery of health programs, services, and functions to our communities and fosters a culture of quality improvement within our organization.
