Early Voting Schedule

Dates and deadlines

  • February 24 - March 13: Federal and State candidate filing period. File with Iowa Secretary of State.
  • March 3 - March 20: Filing period for Soil and Water District Commission and for candidates for partisan county office who are not running as Democrats of Republicans. File with Auditor's Office.
  • March 3 - March 25: Filing period for June 2 Primary Election (Democratic and Republican candidates for partisan county offices.)
  • Tuesday, June 2: Primary Election. Democratic and Republican nominees for all partisan offices except president were chosen at the Primary Election.
  • Monday, July 6: First day to request a mailed absentee ballot, 120 days before the election. Absentee request form
  • July 27 - August 14: Filing period for presidential candidates only. File with Secretary of State.
  • Wednesday, August 26: 5 p.m. filing deadline for County Agricultural Extension Council and township offices; file at Auditor's Office. (No first day, may file at any time before August 26)
    Note: Filing for township offices originally closed on March 20, but state law was changed. House File 2486 re-opened filing for township offices until 5 p.m. August 26.
  • Monday, September 7: Labor Day, office closed.
  • Saturday, September 19: Auditor's Office must mail military and overseas ballots by this date, 45 days before election.
  • Monday, October 5: First day to send out mailed absentee ballots. A no-contact ballot delivery system to return voted ballots will be available at the Auditor's Office.
    First day for in-person early voting. Because of the COVID-19 situation, drive-up early voting will be located at the parking ramp north of the Health and Human Services Building, 855 S. Dubuque St. (Entrance to voting will be from Clinton Street side.) Voting hours 8 AM to 5 PM (note difference from normal office hours)
  • Monday, October 12: Johnson County does not observe federal Columbus Day holiday and office will be open.
  • Saturday, October 24:
    • Voter pre-registration deadline, 5 PM. Registration still possible after this date with election day registration procedure.
    • Last day to request mailed absentee ballot. Request must be in our office by 5 PM. In person early voting still available after this date.
    • Early voting open 8 AM to 5 PM as required by law. Voting will be drive-up at the parking ramp north of the Health and Human Services Building, 855 S. Dubuque St.
  • Saturday, October 31: Early voting open 8 hours as required by law. Voting will be drive-up at the parking ramp north of the Health and Human Services Building, 855 S. Dubuque St.
  • Monday, November 2: 
    • Postmark deadline for mailed absentee ballots. Ballots may be returned in-person to our office until the polls close November 3.
    • Last day for in person drive-up early voting, 8 AM to 5 PM (note difference from normal office hours)
  • Tuesday, November 3: Election Day. Polls open 7 AM to 9 PM. Vote at regular polling places.

    • Johnson County's three state senators were elected to four year terms in 2018 and are not on the ballot in 2020.
  • County Board of Supervisors: three seats
  • County Sheriff
  • County Auditor
  • County Agricultural Extension Council: four seats
  • Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioner: three seats
  • Township officials: two trustees in all rural townships.
    • Some townships may elect a third trustee or a clerk to fill a vacancy.
  • Judicial retention (yes or no for judges to remain in office)
  • Iowa constitutional convention question
