Precinct Election Officials

Every election day, hundreds of Precinct Election Officials are needed to staff polling places located throughout Johnson County. As a PEO, you will be a key factor in how our citizens regard elections and it will be your job to ensure anyone who is eligible and wants to vote is given the opportunity.

Precinct Election Officials are paid $16.00 per hour, plus time and a half for any hours over eight in a single day. Mileage is paid at $0.58 per mile.


Requirements for serving as a Precinct Election Official

  • Must be a registered voter in Johnson County
  • Must provide your own transportation to and from the polls
  • Must be willing to work long hours (typically 6am -10pm)
  • Must be willing to attend training prior to working an election

What does a Precinct Election Official do?

  • Assists in setting up the polling place before the polls open on election day
  • Operates a computer program to process voters, distributes ballots, and assists voters when needed
  • Helps maintain an orderly process at the precinct and ensures compliance of voting laws
  • Assists in tabulating and reporting election results
  • Assists in tearing down the precinct after the polls close on election day
